Her works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Folkwang Museum (Essen), as part of the Skulptur Projekte (Münster), at the Goethe Institut Paris (FR), at the Building Bridges Art Exchange (Santa Monica, US) and at 2000 Off Space (Jerusalem, IL). Silke Schönfeld is currently a resident at Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten Amsterdam. She lives and works in Amsterdam (NL) and Dortmund (DE).

Silke Schönfeld's (b. 1988, DE) cinematographic works range between documentary and fiction to varying degrees. In Ein Prozent (One Percent) – imagined communities, for example, the artist approaches a right-wing citizens’ initiative and its rhetoric, while in her series invented traditions she concentrates on lived cultural traditions in different parts of Germany, such as the Maibrauchtum (May rites) in the Rhineland or the Mönchszüge (monk processions) in Saxony.

In her work personal stories are intertwined with historical and social structures. In the process of shooting she dives into a specific context where she confronts herself with her own biases utilizes ambiguities and questions the authenticity of moving images. As a participatory observer she brings people into focus, be it individual protagonists or social groups. She intently observes social structures, codes, and personal stories, yet without passing judgement.
