Statement

By cutting and pasting extracted fragments from various sources on the surface of the canvas, Annabelle Agbo Godeau creates fantasmatic scenes where a profusion of symbolic details, ambiguous texts and forgeries enter into a dialog. Her paintings feed as much from internet subcultures, forgotten movies, as from 20th century fetishist content or from mythological tales. They feature female figures who fall within the scope of representation of the body and its rich and critical history.
Essentially, all the images are drawn from the computer screen, whether they are found and collected or whether they've been self-made through photographed stagings. Thus, the work takes on a number of the many functions of the screen: it protects, conceals, and above all becomes a technology of representation in its own right. By rejecting the idea of a neutral gaze, Annabelle Agbo Godeau thus embraces a position as rich as sensual.
